Petition of William Stewart

House of Commons, Votes and Proceedings, 15th May 1821.

Transcribed by Anne Cooper

(No 595)

A Petition of William Stewart, of Manchester, in the County of Lancaster, was presented, and read; setting forth, That the Petitioner was at the Meeting held in Manchester on the 16th of August 1819, on St. Peter’s Field at which Meeting the greatest Peace and harmony prevailed, till on a sudden the Manchester Yeomanry Cavalry rode upon the ground, and proceeded most furiously to attack the unoffending multitude, men, women, and children, were cut down by them indiscriminately;  the Petitioner received a sabre wound on the right side of his head, which brought him to the ground, where he was almost trampled to death;  with great difficulty (his ribs being broken) the Petitioner crawled to the door of a humane person, who took him into his house, and dressed his wounds;  after some time the Petitioner got home, where he was confined to his bed for upwards of a month;  the Petitioner was unable to work for upwards of two months from the injuries which he received;  the Petitioner is ready to prove these allegations at the Bar of the House;  and therefore humbly prays, That the House will be pleased to institute an inquiry into the bloody proceedings which took place as before stated.
