(No. 621.)
A Petition of William Ogden, of Manchester, in the County of Lancaster, was presented, and read; setting forth, That the Petitioner is a very infirm old man, and attended the Meeting of the 16th of August 1819, to petition the House for what the Petitioner has long thought, and still continues to think, necessary for the salvation of his Country, videlicet, a thorough and radical Reform in the Representation of the People; the Petitioner was on the hustings when, in his opinion, the Manchester Yeomanry Cavalry rode, without provocation or a breach of the peace on the part of the people, into the place of meeting, trampled upon, and cut all before them, till they arrived at a spot where the Petitioner was endeavouring to elude their fury, where he received a sabre cut through the crown of his hat which penetrated his head, another sabre cut he received over his left eye, his body was dreadfully bruised by the blows he received from the Special Constables, till he was black from head to foot; a violent fever ensued, and the life of the Petitioner was greatly endangered; as the Petitioner believes the Laws of the Land have been violated, he humbly prays, That a solemn inquiry may be made into the transactions of the 16th of August, and the guilty instigators and perpetrators (if any) be brought to justice.
