House of Commons, Votes and Proceedings, 15th May 1821.
A petition of Mary Black of Manchester, Lancashire was presented, and read; setting forth, that the petitioner was at the meeting held in Manchester on the 16th of August 1819; the petitioner arrived half and hour before the business of the meeting commenced; the petitioner never saw the least disposition to tumult manifested; but she saw the Cavalry charge the meeting, which they did in so savage and brutal a manner that the petitioner cannot possibly find the words to describe; she was thrown down by the Yeomanry, who trampled her under their horses’ feet in so dreadful a manner that the petitioner from her sufferings was deprived of her senses; on recovering, she discovered that her feet were dreadfully lacerated, and her whole body was one continued mass of bruises; and she has never perfectly recovered from the injuries she received; and praying, that the House will be pleased to cause an inquiry to be made into this daring outrage.
