Petition of James Taylor of Royton, Lancashire.

House of Commons, Votes and Proceedings, 29th November 1819.

Transcribed by Helen Eden

A petition of James Taylor, of Royton, Lancashire, was presented and read; setting forth, that on the 16th day of August in the present year the petitioner attended a public meeting which was held at Manchester, for the discussion of certain grievances, and for the adoption of such legal resolutions as to the meeting might seem fit; but that notwithstanding the legality of the meeting, and of the object for which it had been convened, notwithstanding the peace, order, and decorum which everywhere prevailed among the assembled multitude, and also, notwithstanding that the Riot Act had not been read, or any warning given, the meeting was assailed by the charge of the Manchester Yeomanry Cavalry, who rode down, bruised, and sabred many of the defenseless and unarmed people; that in this furious and unparalleled outrage the petitioner was thrown down, and trampled upon by a horse belonging to one of the aforesaid Yeomanry, whereby the petitioner’s right leg and thigh were much bruised, and himself disabled for some time from leaving the place where he lay sick and fainted from the excessive pain which he endured; that for this violation of his liberties and outrage upon his person the petitioner has not received any satisfaction, and humbly prays that the House will institute such an inquiry as shall bring the authors, abettors, and executors of the above atrocities to justice, and to that punishment which crimes so aggravated merit.
