Petition of James Smith of Thornham

House of Commons, Votes and Proceedings, 29 November 1819 and 22 December 1819

Transcribed by Lauren Jaye Gradwell

(No. 39)

A Petition of James Smith, of Thornham, in the County Palatine of Lancaster, was presented, and read; setting forth, That on Monday the 16th day of August last the Petitioner went to a public meeting at Manchester, in the County aforesaid, which said meeting was legally convened and peaceably assembled, when it was violently attacked by the Manchester Yeomanry Cavalry, under the orders of the local Magistracy; that by this violent outrage the Petitioner was trampled down under the horses of the Yeomanry aforesaid, and sorely bruised in his left leg, right arm, and various other parts of his body, whereby he was totally disabled for a long time, and is not yet completely recovered from the effects of his bruises; that in laying this humble statement of his wrongs before the House of Petitioners is less impelled by his personal feeling than by a strong and just indignation for the outrage thus offered to the liberties of Englishmen in the case of the Petitioner; wherefore the Petitioner prays, That the House would institute such a inquiry as shall bring the authors and executors of this diabolical outrage to such punishment as conduct so atrocious merits.
