House of Commons, Votes and Proceedings, 15th May 1821.
A petition of James Boothby, of Manchester, Lancashire was presented, and read; setting forth, that the petitioner was present at the meeting which took place on the 16th of August, 1819, in Manchester, when a body of Yeomanry Cavalry most inhumanly made a charge upon the assembly, although the petitioner is humbly of [the] opinion that no provocation whatever was given by the people; one of the Yeomanry made a furious attack upon the petitioner, and inflicted a severe wound upon his forehead with a sabre; a second blow was leveled at the petitioner, which he fortunately evaded, when the petitioner was rode down by the same person, and trampled under his horse’s feet, in consequence of which the petitioner was severely bruised and lacerated in various parts of his body, and was quite disabled for several weeks; the petitioner humbly prays, that the House would be pleased to institute an inquiry into the transactions which took place on the afore-mentioned occasion.
