Not just Peterloo – a series of talks on state violence

Michael Sanders “How many shots were fired?”: the ‘Plug Plot Insurrection’ and Peterloo

In the late summer of 1842, Lancashire teetered on the brink of insurrection.  Textile workers angry at the rejection of the second Chartist petition were further provoked by notice of a planned cut in wages.  This talk examines the origins, development and significance of the ‘Plug Plot Insurrection’ and explores the role which the memory of Peterloo played throughout the strike.
