Sunday 18 August, 12.12.15pm

At 12 noon on Sunday 18 August 2019 Quakers from around the Manchester area will commemorate the Peterloo massacre at one of the few structures in the area that has stood since 1819.

Parts of the boundary wall enclosing the Friends’ Meeting House on Mount Street were erected in about 1795 and have remained in place ever since. The wall along Bootle Street played an important role in the events of 16 August 1819 as peaceful protestors were crushed against it by the military.

200 years after the tragedy Quakers will attempt to encircle this wall completely in a silent human chain. This chain will symbolise the strength of peaceful protest. It will commemorate those who died to advance our democratic rights and will highlight how much more work is needed to achieve a more just and peaceful society. Anyone is welcome to join the chain and help create a striking image of the power of the people to change the world.

This silent vigil will be followed by tea & cake inside from 12.15pm. All are welcome to stay for a presentation and discussion on the theme of ‘Quakers & Peterloo: Where were they?’, which will explore ideas of hidden history and fake news (1-2pm).

Enormous thanks to our partners and funders
