To mark 200 years since the Peterloo Massacre, we’re looking at the connections between Peterloo and two local National Trust properties – Quarry Bank and Dunham Massey.

New research has been undertaken by  a group of academics and volunteer researchers over the last year and revealed information not previously seen.

We are marking the bicentenary of the Peterloo Massacre through two new films inspired by conversations with people about rights and responsibilities, freedoms and the power to create change. Under the artistic direction of Turner Prize-winner Jeremy Deller, we are working with artist family Grace Surman and Gary Winters and their two young children Hope and Merrick on the two films; one at Dunham Massey and one at Quarry Bank.

An exhibition about the connections to Peterloo and the family’s inspiration behind the scenes for the films is now on view in an exhibition in the cabinets on the first floor of Central Library both inside and outside the Reading Room.

Visitors can respond to the question ‘what would you stand up for?

The Glorious Phantoms project is part of Peterloo 2019.

The Peterloo art commision is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and with additional support from Art Fund.
